Saburomaru IV The Emperor 48%

he reference for the film "Welcome to the Komada Distillery" is the Saburomaru Distillery, located in the Hokuriku region. Although relatively young, Saburomaru has gained recognition among whisky enthusiasts for its meticulous craftsmanship and spirit of bold innovation, consistently delivering unique and delightful experiences.

One of its standout releases is the Tarot Card Series, which has now reached its fifth edition. The latest release, The Emperor, was distilled in 2020 and bottled in 2024. It features Highland peat similar to that used by Ardmore, with malt roasted to a phenol content of nearly 50 ppm, close to that of Ardbeg. The whisky is then fermented in wooden washbacks using a combination of beer and whisky yeast, following a method reminiscent of Ben Nevis. Distillation takes place in the world’s only tin-bronze hybrid still.

This distinctive production process, combined with the strong reception of previous editions, suggests that The Emperor will be another remarkable addition to the series.

In terms of flavor, it offers notes of apples and pineapples, accompanied by hints of fruity acidity and tartness. The malt character is prominent, evoking flavors of wheat beer and sourdough bread, with touches of vanilla, pepper, and an oaky undertone. The peat influence manifests in intense ashy, smoky, and charcoal-like elements. The result is a rich, full-bodied whisky with a multi-dimensional, layered flavor profile.
