BY FARR GC CHARDONNAY 2024
A formidable wine here from a classic producer and now regarded as one of Australia's best Chardonnay wines.
GC stands for Gary Charles, but it might as well stand for ‘gets Chardonnay’ - this wine is the result of years of fine-tuning, a tribute to both site and stubborn attention to detail. The fruit comes off three densely planted slopes just outside Bannockburn, each picked and handled separately depending on how the soil holds water, how the light hits the vines, and how the season plays out.
The 2024 vintage was dialled in. Dry but not hot, clean fruit, and no rush at harvest. Fruit was pressed whole bunch, solids kept in, then everything went to barrel - half of them new - to ferment naturally. There’s some lees work, but not a lot. Just enough to round out the edges without dulling the structure.
It's a powerful Chardonnay that feels settled. Mineral and firm, but still plush where it needs to be. Citrus, meal, stone, a tiny bit of struck match. Nothing out of place, but nothing trying too hard either.
A brilliant wine and a rare gem, perfect either for the cellar and/or a special occasion.
